Bruno Misonne
The Sky’s the Limit on a Virtual Flight!
Pre-Flight: An Introduction
Bruno Misonne isn’t your typical composer. Bruno
has created an entirely new genre of music using instruments no one has ever used before … airplanes! The ability to harness the sounds
of jet engines, propellers and air traffic control to create music isn’t an easy task. It takes a special talent to accomplish this.
So it is no surprise that Bruno is also a trainee pilot. However, to really get to know this talented and creative composer from Belgium,
we must take a virtual flight on one of his high flying instruments … a jumbo jet! Our captain and pilot for this flight will be none
other than Bruno himself. So let’s go to the cockpit and meet our pilot before we take off!
In The Cockpit: Meet Your Musical Pilot!
Bruno Misonne has flown many hours as a trainee pilot, but as we will see, he has studied many years to become a composer. The reason
our musical pilot has melodies that soar with such great lift has less to do with his training in aviation, but more to do with genetics!
Bruno comes from a very musical family. His parents were deeply into classical music, and they ensured that Bruno would be exposed
to classical music and the works of great compositions right from the start! As Bruno states, “Classical music was everywhere … it
was in the car, the living room, the kitchen … I could not escape it as a child!” As the typical rebellious youth, a young Bruno would
have paid millions to get rid of the constant sounds of Beethoven, Mozart and Bach. Today, however, Bruno realizes that this exposure
to the classics was integral to his development as a musician. Bruno says, “It was priceless I now realize. Today I would pay millions
to keep my musical past as it is because it has developed my musical ear.”
Bruno has become the composer he is today, not only due
to exposure to classical music, but also because of his dedication to “self study.” For Bruno, training in the theory and methods
of musical composition has been a lifelong vision quest of self discovery. It was reading books such as Samuel Adler’s Study of Orchestration and
learning from the works of his cohorts and musical idols that further developed his skills. Bruno says, “I’d have to say some of my
musical heroes are Hans Zimmer, James Dooley and Nobuo Uematsu, and in addition, I was always impressed with Russian composer Modest
Petrovich Mussorgsky and his Pictures of an Exhibition.”
Perhaps the most important influence on Bruno Misonne’s music and development
as a composer is his love of aviation. For it was in Bruno’s training as a pilot that he realized that aircraft could be used to make
music. So it’s time for our musician, our captain and our pilot to take us on a virtual flight to find out more about his music and
his life! Are you ready for take off? Bruno’s at the controls!
Departure: A Virtual Takeoff!
Bruno has decided that this virtual flight
will originate out of Eindhoven Airport, which is in the Netherlands. The weather is perfect this day as the jet engines begin to
roar. We race down the runway and lift gently into the air. Quickly, Bruno gains altitude and banks westward into the deep blue skies.
As the plane levels off, we are already over Belgium airspace and below is the picaresque village of Poppel, Belgium. It was in Poppel
that Bruno was born and raised. Amidst the quiet rural countryside of his hometown, Bruno learned to love the quiet of the farmland.
It was also in Poppel that he was immersed in the Classical works of so many great composers, and nurtured by his musical parents
and family.
Flyover: High Above The City of Wavre
As our virtual flight continues, we bank towards the south and below pass over agricultural
fields dotted with red brick houses. We are on our way to Wavre, Belgium. The countryside below yields to the cityscape of the large
city of Brussels, Belgium. It is just south of Brussels that the landscape becomes hilly and the rolling farmlands appear once again.
Below us the small city of Wavre comes into view. It is the city of Wavre that Bruno now calls home. It is where he lives, works and
composes. It is amidst the quiet surroundings that he finds his inspiration. Bruno states, “Wavre is a fairly quiet town and I prefer
it this way … my favorite hours to compose are usually the nighttime hours, when all is still and quiet.” Often, one can find Bruno
working on a melody or composition in his mind, while at the same time strolling through his garden. Wavre is definitely the creative
center for this composer. It is in this city that Bruno finds the fuel to produce his tracks. Now, our flight moves onward, away from
Wavre and heads northward!
